Dear Mr. Wolcott,
As an owner of wood docks for over 30 years and having been around nothing else my entire life, I was very interested in the fiberglass dock idea. Although it is hard to “try” something new, I have never been happy with the life expectancy of wood docks (10 years would be a long life in the dock world), hated the slivers, noise, slippery surface and general dirt which becomes a permanent part of the surface (not to mention the ducks that they attract). The clean lines and beautiful surface were what first took my eye and piqued my interest. I felt there may be things I would give up, but after seeing this dock in action, we have found nothing that was lost and a great deal that we have gained.
While the surface is light in color, it does not attract or hold dirt and is cleaned easily and quickly with a few buckets of water. It also stays very cool to the feet, even on a hot day. The ducks have moved to our neighbors’ wood docks….another great thing!!
In the first week we had the dock, we had a major storm, and at Priest Lake those are real dock-testers. The waves were big enough to wash the full length of the dock but it did not lurch or buck as our old dock had. It moved with the water and stayed incredibly stable side-to-side as well as end-to-end. While both neighbors dock squealed and clanked, our dock was silent….another feature I hadn’t even thought about. While our docks in the past had gotten very slippery in stormy rainy conditions, the Ultra Dock’s surface became virtually slip proof when wet. It felt incredibly safe to use even under stormy conditions as we worked to secure our boat. The dock’s water-shedding design allowed it to dry within minutes after the storm passed so that we could move back out and enjoy the rest of our day on a perfectly dry surface (again, something that had not even been a thought prior to our getting this system).
The features that we chose have all been great. We love the tie rings that become flush with the dock when not in use so that there is more room to put chairs, towels and people. The bumper system has made us feel very secure tying our boats given the investment we have made in them. But we are most excited about the custom walkway you have designed for us. It has allowed one of the dock owners who must use a walker to move on and off the dock without stepping up or down and has made coming to the lake something that she can now continue to do.
Being island dwellers and using boats as our only means of access creates a real need for our dock to be stabile, non-slip and maintenance free. We are SO HAPPY with our Ultra Dock. We also are very grateful to you and your staff for the incredible attention to detail you have given our dock and us since our work together began. The service throughout this process has been magnificent and your pride in your product is so evident. Although it is easy to give warranties of one kind or another, I have never heard of a 10 year warranty on a wood dock and am sure that you and Ultra Dock will stand behind your product. I also believe you probably will never need to. This appears to be a first class product in design and construction.
